Longarm Quilting Service

right-longarm-quilting-service left-Longarm-Quilting-ServiceHere at Quilts ‘N Kaboodle we offer several quilting styles to enhance the beauty of your individual quilt. All of our quilting is hand guided on our A1 Longarm Quilting Machine. We are happy to assist you in quilting design choices when we receive your quilt top, whether in person at your drop off appointment or phone/ email consultations if your top is shipped.

What Type of Quilting Styles Are Offered?

Basically there are two types of quilting categories – edge to edge or custom – with varying degrees within each category.

Edge to Edge (Pantograph) -This style of quilting is also called all over because the design covers the entire quilt – top to bottom, side to side – or “all over.” We offer several edge to edge designer patterns (pantographs) for you to choose from as our most economical quilting service. One color of thread.

Custom – Totally hand guided, relying on the knowledge and skill of the quilter. Uses a variety of techniques and patterns to highlight the uniqueness of your quilt with a light to moderate density. Includes one custom border treatment. Up to two thread colors. Additional thread changes or additional borders will have an additional charge.

Heirloom – For your quilts that are destined to be an heirloom! Totally hand guided, relying on the knowledge and skill of the quilter. This is a denser quilting than custom using a variety of techniques which can include ruler work, stitch in the ditch, detailed background fillers, beautiful feathers, and/or formal design elements that enhance each individual block and detail of the pieced top. Includes one border treatment and two thread colors. Additional thread changes or additional borders will have an additional charge

Please note:. If you desire custom quilting or heirloom quilting I am assuming you are coming to me for my art and skill as a quilter. We will discuss the density (which affects the price range), thread colors and any specialty design elements I offer, beyond that please recognize that your quilt top then becomes my canvas – in other words, please allow me time to live with your quilt to be inspired as to create the thread play that is needed to complement your piecing and design. It is within this freedom that I do my best work.

I’m Not Familiar With The Terms, Are There Photo Examples?

A picture is worth a thousand words, so we’ve taken a thousand photos! Seriously! Quilts ‘N Kaboodle has been longarm quilting for customers since 2004. That’s a lot of quilts! Take a moment to visit our Gallery for a sampling of our work including Edge to Edge, Custom, and Heirloom.

What Additional Services Are Offered?

Design Elements – Special design elements with serious thread play to add sparkle to your quilt can be added for an additional fee per element. Many inspiring elements to choose from, all hand guided, relying on the knowledge and skill of the quilter, therefore each element will be unique to your quilt. Priced per individual design. Pricing varies based on design.

Karen’s Special Butterfly – choose to sprinkle one, two or three (or more) beautiful butterflies among your freestyle custom quilt. This is the Karen’s “signature design” as well as Quilts ‘N Kaboodle’s trademark logo. Priced individually.

Hanging Sleeve – Customer provides the fabric (9” by width of top) and we will machine stitch on top and hand sew on the bottom.

Binding – We will be happy to add the binding to your finished quilt. We offer three binding options, all are priced per liner inch. Each option includes mitered corners and seamless end to end construction. Customer provides the fabric.

• Option A : machine sewn on the front only with customer finishing the hand sewing on the back.

• Option B: full service includes machine sewn on the front and hand sewn on the back.

• Option C: machine sewn completely , front and back – wonderful for t-shirt quilts, children’s quilts or utility quilts.

QNK does not hand sew binding for show quilts. Inquire about pricing for scalloped edges.

Note: We believe in teachable moments. If you prefer to do your own binding but do not know how, just ask! We are always ready for a quick demo when you pick up your quilt.

May I Purchase Backing From Quilts ‘N Kaboodle?

We do offer a variety of wide back fabrics including wide back batik or you are welcomed to provide your own. Your backing needs to be 8 inches wider and longer than your quilt top and must be squared and pressed for proper loading. It is most import to review our comments on backing before you bring your quilt top for quilting.

Is Batting Available for Purchase or May I Bring My Own?

You may provide your own batting if it is a quality batting compatible to longarm quilting or you may purchase batting from the selection we offer. Batting should be 8 inches wider and longer than your quilt top . Please see our comments on batting for more details.

May I Bring My Own Thread?

Longarm machines are industrial machines requiring different threads than a home sewing machine. A large variety of threads are offered for your selection, including solids, variegated and specialty threads. Our minimum thread charge per quilt includes solids or variegated thread. Specialty threads and/or multiple thread changes will have additional charges.

How Do You Determine the Costs?

Rates are based upon the type of quilting and charged per square inch. During your appointment you will be given a written estimate that will include the cost of quilting, thread charge, supplies and/or additional fees. There is a minimum of $50 for edge to edge quilting services , a minimum of $75 for custom quilting and $100 minimum for heirloom quilting services. Please note: Show Quilts, Wholecloths or other Special Commissioned quilts are priced per project not per square inch.

We accept cash, personal check or if shipping your quilt, you can be invoiced through PayPal for all quilting services rendered. Payment is due upon pick up or prior to return shipping.

How Do I Prepare My Quilt Top For Longarm Quilting?

Please do NOT baste or pin the three layers together! It is not necessary for longarm quilting, in fact, if you have already done this you will need to undo before your appointment. Please review Preparing Your Quilt Top for Longarm Quilting for detailed comments concerning quilt top preparations.

How Do I Make an Appointment to Drop Off or Ship My Quilt?

Please use our Contact Us form to make an appointment to visit our studio to discuss quilting options, measure your quilt top and quilt backing to receive an estimate. There is no charge for a consultation if your quilt is left for quilting services, however, if you chose not to use our services there will be a $25 fee imposed for the appointment time. Please note – hours are by appointment only.

If you need to ship your quilt please use our Contact Us form for shipping instructions.

How Long Will It Take To Get My Quilt Back?

It depends. Quilts are placed on one of two waiting lists – edge to edge or custom/heirloom – and quilted in the order they are received.

Custom quilting is labor intensive and done on a limited basis, therefore the waiting list for custom quilting is longer than edge to edge quilting.

Please plan in advance if your quilt is needed by a certain deadline, recognizing that our busiest times of year are spring for graduation, fall prior to and during Houston International Quilt Market/Festival and of course, Christmas. Plan early as not to be disappointed!
